Job Description: Outreach & Community Engagement Coordinator (PDF)

This full-time (40 hrs/week) position is responsible for managing the statewide outreach plan for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), coordinating Utahns Against Hunger’s outreach strategy for other nutrition programs, and helping to develop and implement our community engagement plan.

We are looking for applicants who are committed to increasing access to food, promoting racial, social and economic justice in the food system, and addressing structural inequalities and other root causes of hunger and poverty.

Primary Roles & Responsibilities:

Approximately 60% of this position will be managing the SNAP Outreach Program, this includes:

  • Identifying new community partners throughout the state who are interested in conducting outreach activities (e.g. SNAP eligibility pre-screening and application assistance);
  • Coordinating a monthly invoicing process with the Utah Department of Workforce Services (DWS) to reimburse community partners and Utahns Against Hunger for eligible outreach activities;
  • Providing training, policy and technical support to all community partners. Onsite trainings include: teaching staff at partner outreach sites how to do SNAP pre-screenings, how to provide education about the benefits of the SNAP program, how to provide assistance with accessing Utah’s online SNAP application, and how to track the number of potentially eligible individuals who apply for SNAP;
  • Conducting a yearly onsite monitoring visit to each of the outreach sites across the state; and
  • Conducting other SNAP outreach activities, including assisting low-income community members with SNAP applications, tabling at community events, and ensuring community partners have SNAP outreach materials.

The balance of this position will be spent on a variety of activities, including:

  • Working with staff to develop new priorities and strategies for community engagement. This could include activities like voter education and registration, grassroots organizing, stakeholder engagement, advocacy trainings, and story collection from those who have lived experience using federal nutrition programs;
  • Working with staff to conduct outreach for the Summer Food Program and to promote SNAP at farmers markets;
  • Working on state legislative assignments;
  • Helping to maintain and grow our social media presence;
  • Attending coalition meetings, as appropriate; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Familiar with SNAP and other federal nutrition programs
  • Knowledge/experience working on food access issues
  • Fluent in Spanish
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Able to work independently and take initiative
  • Responsible, independent and open to learning and feedback
  • Team-oriented with a good sense of humor
  • Ability to adapt to a sometime dynamic environment
  • Confident with speaking in front of groups
  • Highly organized with ability to multi-task
  • Familiar with client management databases
  • Familiar with Joomla
  • Experience with Microsoft Office

Must have:

  • A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Be able to travel
  • Experience (paid or as a volunteer) working to directly assist low income people
