Celebrating Utah School Breakfast Week

March 23, 2018

Governor Gary Herbert proclaimed March 19-23, 2018 Utah School Breakfast Week. At Utahns Against Hunger we work to improve participation in the School Breakfast Program and promote alternative breakfast serving models. Research shows that students who eat school breakfast are more likely to maintain a healthy weight, drink more milk, and eat more fruit daily!

To celebrate USBW, UAH:
  • Acquired an pdfofficial proclamation from Governor Herbert.
  • Released Starting the Day Right II: Best Practices for Increasing School Breakfast Participation in Utah Schools. Following up from the original report released in 2016, Starting the Day Right II has updated data for school year 2014-2015, 2015-2016, and 2016-2017.
  • Held a press conference with the Utah Breakfast Expansion Team to celebrate USBW, the release of Starting the Day Right II, and announce the winners of the Exemplary School Breakfast Program Award.
  • Presented the Exemplary School Breakfast Program Award with the Utah Breakfast Expansion Team. These awards were designed to celebrate the great work Utah schools are doing to increase participation in the School Breakfast Program. There was also a Great Idea Award for schools that to implement an alternative breakfast model yet, or expanded or modified an existing alternative model. Award winners can be found pdfhere.

As we wrap up Utah School Breakfast Week we would like to acknowledge all of the school food staff, teachers, principals and custodial staff who work so hard to ensure students start the day fed and ready to learn, thank you! The School Breakfast Program operates differently in every school-at one school breakfast is served in the cafeteria, at another it is served in the classroom-but without the school staff is wouldn't happen. We appreciate all that you do!
